In the past, Malepeai said, Fish and Game has used videos or diagrams or had new hunters practice “skinning” a wrapped candy bar.
“In hunter education, sometimes we’ll show a video (of field dressing), but it doesn’t build that muscle memory,” said Ian Malepeai, director of marketing for Fish and Game. That’s exactly what the Idaho Department of Fish and Game had in mind when it asked Leman and his fellow students at Boise State University’s Games, Interactive Media, and Mobile Technology program to design a virtual reality field dressing.

Though he’s never shot an elk, Leman has gone through this simulation enough times that he’s confident he could skin the animal and harvest its meat. When the animal is fully butchered, Leman stands up, sets down the controllers in his hands and removes his virtual reality headset. Leman removes the elk’s legs and trims off cuts of meat, laying them off to the side. He draws his blade across the animal’s belly, over its legs and along its neck, peeling back the hide bit by bit. This Online Hunter Education Course is provided FREE to everyone by the NRA. Individuals who are ten and under can hunt any game species in Oklahoma using an apprentice-designated hunting license. You will be asked for this number at the end of the online class and it is required to receive your certificate. Please visit to locate your existing Customer ID number or create a new one. IMPORTANT – Students will need an Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation Customer ID number to complete this course. Students who are issued this certificate, upon turning ten, will be required to complete the entire hunter education course again. This certificate will only be used to meet the requirement of certain shooting sports organizations. Students under ten years of age are not eligible for a hunter education certification, however, they will be issued a “certificate of completion” that can be used as proof of passing the course. Upon completion of this online course, students ten years and older will be issued a hunter education certification card. The NRA online hunter education course for Oklahoma is free to everyone. You do not have to be a resident of New Mexico to take this online course.

New Mexico hunters over the age of 18 are not required to take hunter education, but are highly encouraged to take this free Hunter Education course. New Mexico hunters under 18 years of age may not hunt with a firearm without first obtaining a certificate proving that they have passed this, or another state’s hunter education course or are currently registered in the New Mexico Mentored-Youth (MY) Hunting Program.
